Design and function of transformers & transformers

Transformers and transformers consist of a magnetic core and two or more windings made of copper wire. The core, usually made of ferrite or laminated iron, is used for efficient magnetic coupling of the windings. As soon as an electrical voltage is applied to the primary winding, a magnetic field is created which induces a voltage in the secondary winding.

In power electronics, power transformers enable efficient voltage adjustment, while signal transformers reliably transmit sensitive data. Special variants such as planar transformers offer particularly compact designs, while AEC-Q200-compliant models meet the stringent requirements of the automotive industry.

Thanks to the high-quality components from Bourns, Rotima AG supplies reliable solutions for a wide range of applications.

Further information on transformers & transformers

In our FAQ section, we answer the most important questions about transformers & transformers. You can find out more about how they work, areas of application and technical properties. Whether you are looking for power transformers, signal transformers or AEC-Q200-compliant components - you will find the right answers here.

What types of transformers & transformers are there?

Transformers & transformers are available in many variants, depending on the area of application. Power transformers are used in power electronics for voltage conversion and insulation. Planar transformers are compact, efficient solutions for high-frequency applications.

AEC-Q200-compliant transformers are used in automotive technology and meet strict quality standards.

HCT transformers are optimized for high-current applications, while signal transformers safely transmit sensitive signals. BMS transformers are essential for battery management systems in electric vehicles. SP-E flyback transformers are used in switching power supplies to convert energy efficiently. Chip LAN transformers ensure interference-free network communication. Each design has specific properties to meet the requirements of a wide range of industries.
Learn more

How do transformers & transformers work in power electronics?

Transformers & transformers use the principle of electromagnetic induction. An alternating current in the primary winding generates a magnetic field in the core, which induces a voltage in the secondary winding. This allows voltages to be adjusted, electrical insulation to be ensured and energy to be transferred efficiently.

Power transformers are often found in switching power supplies, where they convert high voltage into low voltage. Planar transformers offer high power density thanks to their flat design. HCT transformers enable low-loss transmission of high currents. Efficiency and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) can be optimized by choosing the right materials, such as ferrite cores or special alloys.
Learn more

Why are AEC-Q200-compliant transformers important for the automotive industry?

AEC-Q200-compliant transformers & transformers meet strict requirements for temperature, vibration and electrical load capacity. In vehicles, electronic components have to withstand extreme conditions, be it heat in the engine compartment or temperature fluctuations in outdoor use.

BMS transformers ensure precise monitoring of battery cells in electric vehicles. Signal transformers enable reliable communication between control units. Thanks to extensive testing for durability and safety, AEC-Q200-compliant components guarantee trouble-free operation and a long service life in demanding environments.
Learn more

Where are chip LAN transformers used and what advantages do they offer?

Chip LAN transformers are crucial for network communication. They are used in Ethernet connections, routers, switches and industrial communication modules. Their main purpose is to transmit signals, reduce interference and ensure galvanic isolation between end devices and the network.

Modern chip LAN transformers support high transmission rates of up to 10 Gigabit Ethernet and ensure a stable connection even in demanding environments. Special shielding and optimized windings minimize signal loss, which improves network performance.
Learn more

What advantages do planar transformers offer over classic transformers?

Planar transformers have a compact design that enables a higher power density. In contrast to classic wire windings, they use flat copper layers on printed circuit boards, which reduces stray losses and achieves more efficient cooling.

This makes them ideal for switching power supplies, high-frequency applications and space-critical designs. They also offer excellent thermal performance as heat dissipation through the PCB structure is improved. In applications such as power electronics, automotive systems and industrial electronics, planar transformers enable a compact design with high efficiency - a clear advantage over conventional solutions.
