Why Polyolefin Heat-Shrink Tubing Is Important in Industrial Applications

At ROTIMA, polyolefin is the primary material used for many types of heat-shrink tubing. Standard thin-walled tubing is made of highly flexible, tough polyolefin; it is radiation-crosslinked and is used for protection, color-coding, or as a printed cable identification sleeve.

The most technically relevant specifications include shrink ratio, wall thickness, internal adhesive, continuous operating temperature, minimum shrink temperature, dielectric strength, longitudinal shrinkage, and flammability. These values vary significantly depending on the product family. Therefore, technical tables should be included only once, centrally on the page.

The product range includes heat-shrink tubing from super-thin to thick-walled, with short lead times thanks to optimized inventory management and a strong local presence in Germany and Switzerland.

Halogen-free heat-shrink tubing is manufactured without chlorine, fluorine, iodine, or bromine. They are used particularly in applications where personal safety, low smoke and corrosion risks, or high-value assets are critical—for example, in public buildings, hospitals, schools, data centers, elevator systems, public transportation, tunnel systems, or military applications.

Thermal Activation and Processing

Shrinkage occurs when exposed to heat. Depending on the ROTIMA variant, the minimum shrinkage temperature ranges from 120 °C to 135 °C. SFTW, MDT, MDT-A, and HDT-A require a minimum of 135 °C; according to the data, GTI 3000, ETW-803, and ETW-804 begin shrinking at 120 °C.

Suitable heat sources for shrink applications include hot-air guns, heating cabinets, continuous-conveyor ovens, and ring heaters. To ensure reliable results, the tubing size, shrink ratio, wall thickness, component diameter, and temperature control must be coordinated.

Why We Are Chosen as a Partner for Heat-Shrink Tubing Solutions

Since 1964, we have been developing solutions based on polyolefins and halogen-free materials for a wide range of industries. Our project developers provide support in the following areas:

  • Material selection and sizing
  • Validation of temperature and process parameters
  • Sampling and series production approval
  • Integration into existing manufacturing processes

We consider not only the product, but the entire application system—from geometry to the operating environment.

Cutting, Custom Sizes, and Delivery Formats

ROTIMA offers heat-shrink tubing on rolls, by the meter, in special lengths, and as custom-cut pieces. Thin-wall and medium-wall heat-shrink tubing with diameters ranging from 1 mm to 10 cm can be cut to length starting at 3 mm, according to customer specifications.

The minimum cutting tolerance is ±0.25 mm; upon request, measurements can be taken with microscopic precision down to 0.01 mm and supplied with a test report.

Polyolefin & Halogen-Free Heat-Shrink Tubing:
Technical Specifications and Solutions by Industry

We specifically use polyolefin- and halogen-free heat-shrink tubing when electrical insulation, mechanical protection, and consistent processing must be combined. The key factors here are the material’s controlled thermal recovery and its adaptation to the specific operating environment.

Since 1964, we have been developing heat-shrink tubing solutions for industrial applications and supporting our customers in designing solutions tailored to the specific material and application.

Halogen-free variants are used in particular where the formation of corrosive and toxic gases must be reduced in the event of a fire. These materials meet requirements for smoke density and emission behavior without losing the fundamental properties of polyolefin.
Halogen-free heat-shrink tubing for data centers and building systems
In infrastructure projects, the focus is on fire protection and system availability. We use halogen-free heat-shrink tubing when low smoke emission and reduced corrosiveness are required.
