Heat-shrink tubing for electrical insulation, cable protection, and specialized technical applications

Heat-shrink tubing is used in industrial applications for more than just protection. In many projects, the material, shrinkage behavior, temperature resistance, and electrical insulation directly determine the service life, maintenance requirements, and process reliability of entire assemblies.

For over 60 years, our engineers have been supporting companies in the technical selection of suitable heat-shrink tubing solutions for electronics, mechanical engineering, sensor technology, energy technology, medical technology, and demanding industrial applications.

Many failures do not originate at the cable itself, but rather at connections, sensor terminals, or improperly selected protection systems. That is precisely where ROTIMA’s technical expertise comes into play.

Why the Selection of Heat-Shrink Tubing Is Technically Underestimated

At first glance, many heat-shrink tubes appear similar. In real-world applications, however, the materials differ significantly.

  • PTFE is designed to withstand high temperatures and chemical exposure.
  • Silicone emphasizes flexibility and low shrink temperatures.
  • PEEK is considered for high-performance mechanical applications.
  • PVDF is suitable for applications involving high abrasion.
  • FEP combines transparency with chemical resistance.
  • PFA is suitable for aggressive process environments.
  • Polyolefin covers a wide range of standard applications.
  • EPDM cold-shrink tubing allows for installation without the application of heat.

Our hose technology team therefore evaluates thermal load profiles, electrical requirements, motion cycles, chemical exposure, abrasion, moisture, installation conditions, and space constraints.

The technical evaluation is not based solely on diameter or shrink ratio. Real-world load profiles are the decisive factor.

Common Mistakes When Selecting Heat-Shrink Tubing

Typical errorsTechnical consequenceRelevant design criteria
Too high shrinkage temperatureDamage to sensitive componentsHeat input, shrinking process, temperature-sensitive sensors, assembly parameters
Wrong materialPremature material agingMaterial selection, material resistance, polymer aging, operating conditions
Lack of chemical testingSwelling, embrittlement or loss of functionMedia contact, chemical resistance, fluoropolymer, process environment
Too rigid designCable breakage during movementBending radius, dynamic line, reset behavior, cable protection
Unsuitable wall thicknessToo little protective effect or too large installation spaceWall thickness, installation space, mechanical protection, insulation layer
Wrong shrinkage ratioPoor fit on wires, connectors or assembliesShrinkage rate, final diameter, initial diameter, component geometry
Lack of motion analysisMechanical overload at line junctionsMotion profile, Vibration, drag chain, strain relief
Electrical load underestimatedInsulation risk or flashoverDielectric strength, creepage distance, air distance, electrical insulation
Our project experience shows that the most expensive heat-shrink tubing isn't necessarily the right choice. What matters most is that it's technically suited to the application.
Have the project reviewed from a technical standpoint

Heat-Shrink Tubing According to Technical Specifications

Engineers often select heat-shrink tubing not primarily based on material, but rather on the specific application: insulation, temperature, chemicals, movement, or assembly method. This approach reduces the likelihood of making the wrong choice because the technical requirements are evaluated before the material is selected.
