Inductors in practice: Important applications in electrical engineering

Inductors are an integral part of modern electronics. They perform central functions in numerous applications - from power supply to signal processing.

A classic example is their use in switching power supplies. Here they help to compensate for voltage fluctuations and ensure efficient conversion of electrical energy. Inductors also play an important role in high-frequency circuits, for example in wireless communication or filter circuits. RF coils are used here specifically for frequency stabilization.

In industrial electronics, they are indispensable for the control and regulation of electrical systems. Transformers and transformers based on inductors enable reliable voltage adjustment - whether in machine control systems or power electronics.

Thanks to the close cooperation with Hongda Capacitors, Rotima AG offers reliable inductors for demanding applications. Discover our range and rely on proven quality for your electronics projects!

Further information on inductors

Do you have questions about inductors? Then you've come to the right place. In our FAQ section you will find quick and easy-to-understand answers to the most frequently asked questions about this important electronic component.

How do inductors work in a circuit?

Inductors consist of a coil made of wire that generates a magnetic field as soon as current flows through it. This magnetic field stores energy, which is released again when the power source is switched off. In a circuit, inductors act as current limiters, voltage stabilizers or filters.

They prevent voltage peaks, smooth current curves and enable efficient energy transfer. They are particularly essential in switching power supplies, as they help to regulate the desired voltage. In high-frequency circuits, such as in wireless transmissions, they determine resonance frequencies and enable stable signal processing. Their behavior differs depending on the design and material properties.
Learn more

Why are inductors important in switching power supplies?

Inductors play a key role in switching power supplies as they reduce voltage fluctuations and ensure a consistent power supply. In combination with capacitors, they form filter circuits that eliminate unwanted frequencies and minimize electromagnetic interference.

An inductor stores energy in the magnetic field during the switch-on phase and releases it to the load during the switch-off phase. This keeps the output voltage stable and increases efficiency. Switch-mode power supplies with high-quality inductors work more efficiently, generate less heat and consume less energy than conventional linear power supplies.

This is why they are indispensable in modern electronics, from smartphones to industrial systems.
Learn more

What types of inductors are there and where are they used?

There are different types of inductors, depending on the application and design. SMD power inductors are used in compact circuits, for example in mobile devices and computers. SMD signal inductors filter and stabilize electrical signals. RF coils are optimized for high-frequency applications and are used in antenna circuits and wireless communication technologies.

Transformers and transformers are based on inductors and enable voltage adjustments in power supply units or industrial control systems. Each of these variants has specific electrical properties such as inductance, resistance and current carrying capacity, which are optimized depending on the area of application.

What is the difference between an air-core coil and a ferrite core inductor?

The main difference lies in the core material and its influence on the magnetic field. An air-core coil has no magnetic core and is suitable for high-frequency applications as it has hardly any losses due to eddy currents or saturation effects.

However, it requires more turns to achieve the same inductance, which increases space requirements and resistance.

A ferrite core inductor, on the other hand, uses a magnetic core that concentrates the magnetic field and increases the inductance. This makes them more efficient for power applications, such as in switching power supplies or filters. However, a ferrite core can generate losses at high frequencies. The choice of the right design therefore depends on the requirements of the circuit.
Learn more

How do I select the right inductance for my application?

The selection of the appropriate inductor depends on various factors: Inductance value, current carrying capacity, resistance (DCR), saturation current and frequency behavior. In switching power supplies, the inductance should be large enough to ensure a stable output voltage, but not so large that it leads to delays. In high-frequency applications, losses and resonance effects are crucial.

For filter circuits, the inductance must be matched to the frequencies to be suppressed. The design also plays a role: SMD components are space-saving, while leaded inductors can often withstand higher currents. Manufacturer specifications and data sheets help with the selection. If you are unsure, you can contact Rotima AG for advice - as a distributor of high-quality inductors, we have the right solution for every application.
